Her favorite facility offers something new for women in Preston, as it is one of two women-only gyms in the area.
With more than 400 members, the gym hosts weekly classes, running clubs, walk clubs, and social events. But for Freya, it represents more than just a place to practice.
“I was a little scared when I opened a women-only place,” she said. “I knew I was missing out on 50 percent of my potential customers. But after training women and hearing their experiences, I knew there was a need for this space.”
She explained that the environment encouraged members to move outside their comfort zones.
“Since coming in, the space has expanded a lot. It allows women to practice in a co-ed environment that they wouldn’t otherwise have,” she said.
“Religiously, women come here and can take off their hijab that they don’t have that option and that’s really empowering for us.”
For many members, the impact is deeply personal. Becky Platt, one of Freya’s employees, shared how the gym changed her mother’s relationship with fitness.
Becky said: “My mum had never set foot in a gym until we opened this female-only gym.
“She was described as someone who is almost 60 years old, wanted to do strength training and didn’t know where to start.
“If you come to the gym and you’re nervous, we’ll make sure you have all the support you need, so you can feel confident doing it yourself.”

Freya’s journey to fitness was shaped by her own challenges. While initially pursuing a career as a nurse, she experienced an eating disorder and a desire to be as small as possible. However, weight training changed her mindset towards strength and fitness.
“My main focus when I started was to educate women about health and fitness, but also how to fuel their bodies properly and get away from junk food,” she said.
“I think women are constantly being told to follow the latest diet trends. It’s evolved from step aerobics in the 80s to strength training that’s accessible now — but ultimately, it’s about encouraging women to do what’s right for them.”
Eleanor Turner, another employee, highlighted the strong sense of community at the gym.
“I feel very confident in this place. There is no pressure to have equipment, people welcome each other, and real friendships are formed.”
The gym also hosts social events, including retreats and nights out, helping to create a sense of connection beyond fitness.
Since starting FemaleBody Workouts, Freya says her mission has remained clear: “To provide a safe, supportive, and encouraging environment.”
