Healthy eating is an essential part of staying fit for people of all ages. However, its importance grows significantly for an individual as they grow older.
Going to X on March 24th, Dean Guo, a fitness trainer with more than 20 years of experience, pointed to a 2024 study in Nature Age and observed that humans age in two major waves. The first wave occurs around 44, while the second hits around 60.

First, it alters circadian rhythms, affecting cardiovascular health, lipid metabolism and how a person processes caffeine and alcohol. Late night activities and drinking are more harmful at this age.
“It’s not in your head. Your biology changes,” Dan said. “To make it worse, while your body is becoming less forgiving, the food environment is moving in the opposite direction. Ultra-processed foods make up 50 percent of the average adult’s daily calories. Modern diets are designed to make you eat more without feeling full.”
To counter the effects of a changing metabolism, Don shared a list of 5 foods that one should completely avoid to stay fit over 40.
1. Processed meat
The first thing that needs to be removed from the regular diet is processed meat. These include bacon, sausage, hot dogs and deli meats. Like most processed foods, processed meats are also rich in sodium. In combination with saturated fat and nitrates, it accelerates aging.
This compound was also classified as a Group 1 carcinogen by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2015. Instead of processed meats, Don recommends adding ground beef, chicken, oily fish, and canned sardines to your regular diet.
2. Sugary drinks and alcohol
The sugar in such drinks accelerates blood flow and insulin production. If the cells are resistant, sugar helps to accumulate visceral fat. After the age of 40, the body’s ability to process alcohol decreases, and the liver takes longer to clear it from the system. Thus, it is better to replace such drinks with sparkling water, green tea or black coffee.
3. Fried foods
According to Dan, “Cooking at high temperatures creates acrylamide, a known neurotoxin. Most commercial oils use seed oils that turn into trans fats when heated. After 40, your body is already fighting inflammation. Fried foods add gasoline to the fire.” A better alternative, according to the fitness trainer, is to eat foods that are air-fried with olive oil.
4. Refined carbohydrates
Refined carbohydrates are found in foods in our daily diet such as white bread, pastries, instant oils and many other cereals. They have no fiber, which allows the sugar in the food to directly hit the bloodstream and raise insulin levels. This inevitably leads to crashes and people feel fatigued throughout the day. According to Dan, it’s best to replace these foods with steel-cut oats, quinoa, and dates.
5. Ultra-processed snacks and fast food
The harmful effects of ultra-processed foods and fast food are well documented. As Dan shared, “Studies have linked these foods to poor gut health. They reduce beneficial bacteria, increase inflammation, and can damage the gut barrier.”
““Ultra-processed foods are linked to faster biological aging without the calories,” he added, noting that one should replace chips, cookies and most fast foods with almonds and fruit, and Greek yogurt with fruit instead.
“The goal isn’t to eat the right foods. It’s to reduce those foods in our overall diet,” the coach pointed out.
